Tonight marks the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Humans throughout time have left hints and clues that they too celebrated this returning of the sun and longing for the light. It is a reminder that we are connected by our love of light.
In fact, many have heard me say "We are all light eaters". Which is true. We need the sunlight to live a healthy life and I love celebrating the return of that sunlight.
Some of us are busy preparing for other religious or spiritual end-of-year events, but this day is special to me. I am a June baby born during the long hours of summer sunlight. The darkest days are a little harder for me.
During one of my homeopathic classes I took in Switzerland I learned that the last "clearing" you do homeopathically is based on both the strongest day for the patient (their birthday) and the weakest day (6 months later). December is my weaker time of year. Because of this, I spend extra time being cozy and kind to myself. No hurry- worry here. Instead, I focus on the little things like lighting a beeswax candle as the day comes to a close.
The cold weather reminds me of my first practice, many moons ago, which was in Alaska. So much snow and the dark days lasted much longer. Now, in North Carolina, I am much warmer, but the darkness of the year is still experienced, and this evening of Solstice still celebrated in gratitude and anticipation.
Today our weather started this morning at 27F. We had beautiful winter sunshine all day and now the sun is set, and the temperature is dropping again. By 9pm we will be back down to the 30's. It's time to celebrate!
In preparation I have baked Biberle - a warming spiced cookie with freshly made marzipan in the middle. (from the book Advent in the video) I have dried orange slices, collected local pinecones and have my beeswax candle ready to light.
As the darkness descends, I will pick up my soft wool yarn and wooden knitting needles to gently work on my latest project. I will be snuggled in a hand knit shawl and sipping a tea made from a blend of herbs to nurture the warmth body.
What will you do this evening? I hope it is something cozy.

We can never have enough healers in this weary world. I hope you offer yourself and others comfort during these times. Hug your loved ones, volunteer, and celebrate everything filled with light and love.
Blessings,
